Menu bar ping is perfect at the desk. It is useless once a game owns the screen. If you have to Command-Tab to see whether that death was you or the network, you already lost the information.
A compact overlay is a small always-on-top window that keeps latency visible over a fullscreen game. You place it in a corner and ignore it until the icon goes yellow.
What to monitor in a match
- Your game server or region, not only 8.8.8.8. ISP health can be fine while the path to the shard is not.
- Jitter, not just average ping. A 40 ms average with 30 ms jitter feels worse than a steady 55.
- Gateway health. Wi-Fi interference from a microwave is a local problem; shouting at the studio will not fix it.
Keep it out of the way
The overlay should be small, readable on a dark HUD, and not steal mouse focus. If it takes a quarter of the screen, you will turn it off. PingStatus’s compact overlay is built for that: a floating window that stays on top of fullscreen apps so you are not alt-tabbing mid-round.
After the match
If the overlay went red and you felt it, open the history graph. A single spike is noise. A sawtooth for twenty minutes is a ticket for your ISP or a reason to switch off Wi-Fi and use Ethernet.
PingStatus Pro includes a compact overlay so ping stays visible while you play.
